Fact 1: Glatiramer acetate is a medicine used to treat multiple sclerosis. It is used to reduce the number of relapses though it does not reduce progression of
the disease. 

Fact 2: It is a mixture of the following four peptides glutamic acid, lysine, alanine and tyrosine. 

Fact 3: It is taken as a subcutaneous injection.

Fact 4: Mechanism of action - 

  • Glatiramer acetate is an immunomodulator that works by suppressing the immune response.
  • It achieves this, in part, by shifting T-cell population from proinflammatory Thl cells to regulatory Th2 cells. It may act as a decoy to divert the immune response away from myelin. 

Fact 5: Glatiramer acetate is classified as pregnancy category B - meaning "no risk in non-human studies".

Fact 6: An initial injection site reaction composed of anxiety, shortness of breath, flushing and rapid heartbeat may occur within the first 30 minutes of use

Injection site reactions
Lipatrophy at inj. site
Vasodilation / Chest pain
Shortness of breath
Weight gain
