Fast Revision - AMIODARONE

Fact 1: Amiodarone is a medicine used to treat a variety of tachyarrhythmias including atrial fibrillation, atrial flutter and ventricular tachycardia.

Fact 2: It is typically used when other medicines have proven ineffective.

Fact 3: Amiodarone can be administered orally, IV or via the intraosseous route.

Fact 4: Mechanism of action -
# Amiodarone is a class III antiarrhythmic it works by blockade of sodium, calcium and potassium channels.
# It is also an antagonist of both alpha and beta adrenergic receptors. This leads to spontaneous depolarisation and reduced conduction velocity.

Fact 5: Avoid in patients with heart block, thyroid disease or severe hypotension.

Fact 6: It interacts with many drugs including increasing plasma conc. of diltiazem, digoxin and verapamil.

Fact 7: Due to its extremely long half-life (58 days), many side effects can persist for many months, which include:
Interstitial lung disease
Pulmonary fibrosis
Abnormal thyroid function
Corneal microdeposits
Abnormal liver enzymes
Blue-gray skin discoloration
Peripheral neuropathy
