Basic facts about colchicine

Fact 1: Colchicine is an alkaloid derived from the autumn crocus, Colchicum autumnale.

Fact 2: It is primarily used to treat gout, but it may also be used to treat familial 
Mediterranean fever.

Fact 3: Trade names include Colcrys and Mitigare.

Colchicine is administered orally. It is pregnancy category C meaning "risk not ruled out".

Fact 4: Mechanism of action - Colchicine is a microtubule inhibitor that works by binding to tubulin thereby inhibiting mitosis. It also inhibits migration of inflammatory cells such as neutrophils to the affected area. It works by several means to inhibit the inflammatory response and to promote anti-inflammatory mediators.

Fact 5: Low Doses Colchicine is well-tolerated.

Fact 6: High Doses - Gl effects predominate: Diarrhea, Abdominal cramps, Nausea, Vomiting
